Its Monday! What are you reading? From picture books to ya

Its Monday!  What are you reading?  From Picture Books to YA is a weekly feature hosted by Jen and Kellee of Teach Mentor Texts and inspired by Its Monday!  What are you reading by Sheila at Book Journeys.

Last week:  I finally finished the audiobook of Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.  I also read and finished Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.

I'm starting to read Wonder to my 4th graders.  I really hope that in the 25 minutes I have them each day, we can really get the full impact and meaning of the book.  They seem to be enjoying it---we watched the trailer, and I got several questions, "Mrs. Furman, why aren't they looking at him?"  and "Mrs. Furman, what's wrong with his face?"  And then I read the line about how Auggie wasn't going to describe what he looked like, because what you were thinking was probably worse.  You could have heard a pin drop.

  1. So many familiar titles here. I'm glad your catching up with the Harry Potter series. I also love Artemis Fowl, but I don't think I've read the last two or three books yet. I heard the newest one released this year is the last one. I've been reading so much about Wonder by R. J. Palacio, I really should find the book and read it to my ten year old girl. :) Thanks for sharing all these.

    1. Listening to the Harry Potter books is so different from reading them or watching the movies. I love it! I wish all audiobooks were this good!

Wonder is amazing! I think everyone should read it! :)

  2. The Night Circus on audio is amazing because of Jim Dale. As for recommendations-The Rook by Daniel O'Malley is a fun adult read and one I love to recommend. As for YA, I am in love with Five Flavors of Dumb by Antony John. Enjoy your reading week! I am curios to learn what you pick! http://wp.me/pzUn5-1bm

    1. I'm having a hard time with the audio as the story is kind of jumpy in the beginning and I can't go back and reread to make sure I understand. Its so sad though, I'm going to have a hard time finishing it.

I've already read (and liked) 5 Flavors, but thanks!

  3. Did you like Artemis Fowl? I really enjoyed it when I read it a couple of years ago and I can't wait to re-read it next summer with my son.

  4. I read Wonder to my sixth graders as an end of year book- a memorable experience. This year, it's our first read aloud and I can't wait to begin.

  5. I loved Artemis Fowl, but I think I only read the first one. The best was the year I read Wrinkle in Time with my fifth graders and they insisted on having a huge debate about which character was smarter. That was the year they made me read Artemis :)

  6. Thanks for sharing your students' reactions to Wonder. It sounds very similar to what my children (8 and 10) did, as we read it aloud this spring. Another excellently narrated kidlit audiobook is The Emerald Atlas, which is also done by Jim Dale. I read The Night Circus in paper form and found myself having to thumb back to look at date headings, so I can imagine it might be tough as an audio for me.
