In My Mailbox 24: Last one before epic crosscountry trip
In My Mailbox is a weekly posting hosted by Kristi, The Story Siren, where you post what books you've bought, borrowed, been given, downloaded or somehow got your hands on that week.
I won't be doing another IMM until the 21st of August. My husband and I are driving cross-country starting July 29th and won't be back until the 18th of August. If you'd like to periodically check out our travels, you can view our travel blog here for pics, videos and stories.
Anyway---here's what I got!
Purchased (as a birthday gift for my sister):
~Harry Potter 4-7 in paperback
Borrowed from the library:
-Gregor and the Marks of Secret by Suzanne Collins
-The Iron Fey Series (The Iron King, The Iron Queen and The Iron Daughter) by Julie Kagawa
Downloaded:
-Sleepers by Megg Jensen (click here for review and giveaway!)
-Photographs and Phantoms by Cindy Spencer Pape (visit Carina Press to download for FREE!)
I just want to take a second to thank Megg Jensen for sending me a copy of Sleepers to review and offering a copy for giveaway. I really appreciate it!

Sleepers by Megg Jensen: Review and Giveaway!
What would you do for a friend? Would you risk everything? Are you ruled by anger or compassion? Who decides what is "right"? Sleepers by Megg Jensen explores all of these questions and more.
From Megg's blog, here is the summary:
An adoptee raised in a foreign land, sixteen-year-old Lianne was content with her life as handmaiden to the queen, until a spell cast on her at birth activated. Now she's filled with uncontrollable rage and access to magic she thought had been bled from her people years ago. Even her years of secret training in elite hand-to-hand combat and meditation can’t calm the fires raging inside her.
Her heart is torn between two boys, the one she’s always loved and the one who always ignored her. But when the kingdom threatens to tear itself apart due to rumors surrounding the queen’s alleged affair, who will Lianne protect and who will she destroy?
When Megg sent out a tweet on twitter asking for reviewers for her new book, Sleepers, I jumped at the chance! I loved Anathema (book 1 of The Cloud Prophet Trilogy...you can read my review here!), and knew that I had to read another of her books. Sleepers did not disappoint! In fact, I was kind of bummed that it ended!
Lianne knows nothing of her homeland, except what has been told to her. She and two other children were chosen to be adopted by families in Dalagan, the nation that beat her country of Fithian, in hopes that they would learn civility (though you'll come to learn that while the Dalagans had other plans for the children, so did the Fithians). Through some twists and turns, Lianne comes to learn that she is magical, and there is a plot to overthrow the King of Dalagan and his family. This poses a problem as Lianne is best friends with the Queen and loves their children. Lianne not only has to figure out who she is (anger or compassion), but what she should do (how far she would go for a friend).
If you are a fan of fantasy, spunky heroines, or just need a good book to read while you are sitting at the beach or by the pool, then you need to get a copy of Sleepers, pronto.
And now, the fun part! To enter to win an ebook of Sleepers (in your choice of format--Kindle, Nook, Smashwords or PDF), you have to do a couple things:
1. Read my contest/giveaway policy.
2. Be a follower.
3. Leave a comment with your name, email, blog address (if you have one) and preferred ebook format.
4. Open internationally.
5. *optional* If you choose to tweet or blog about the giveaway, (and you don't have to to enter) make sure you let me know (either by putting @maestra_amanda in your tweet, or sending me a link to your blog.)
Since I'm going to be out of town until August 18th, the contest will run from now until then! I will forward the winner's name, email and preferred format to Megg. Good luck!
I'd like to thank Megg for the opportunity to read and review Sleepers, and for her generous donation of a copy for one of you lucky people! If you are on twitter, make sure you follow her, @meggjensen1, and me, @maestra_amanda!

Anathema by Megg Jensen
Anathema is the first in the Cloud Prophet series by Megg Jensen, and I loved it!
Here is the summary from Goodreads:
Sheltered from the outside world with no hope for escape, slave girl Reychel dreads her fifteenth birthday - when her master’s symbol is burned on the back of her bald scalp. Her best friend disappears the night before, leaving her to face the branding ceremony alone. She soon discovers nothing is as it seems when people desperate for freedom beg for Reychel's help.
Can Reychel learn to believe in herself?
On her 15th birthday, in the middle of her horrible branding ceremony, Reychel finds herself involved in a plot to save other slaves like herself, and ultimately a prophecy of old that involved the freeing of her people from the ruling class.
What I liked most about Anathema was Reychel's strenght. She wasn't sure of herself in the beginning, much like a typical teenager. But, by the end of the book, she had grown into a leader. She knew what she needed to do to help her people and ultimately learned about herself. I really enjoyed watching her grow into a force to be reckoned with.
I was upset with the situation at the end with Mark (and I won't say more because I don't want to give anything away), but I'm hoping that it gets resolved in later books. I appreciated that Reychel and Mark had a seemingly normal courtship. They started as friends, later realizing how much they cared for each other. Again, I don't want to say much about the situation at the end, but I'm hoping that it was for show or as a twist to draw other players in, and we learn why in the next book.
This was a very quick read for me, I finished it in one night. The language Ms. Jensen used was easy for me to follow. I have a hard time with fantasy books that have too many weird names, places and their own made up words. Ms. Jensen did not do that, she used language that was easy to understand and accessible to many readers, and I really appreciate that.
I would recommend this book to readers who are unsure of reading fantasy books. It allows you to get your feet wet in the genre, so to speak, without having to jump into the deep end.
Megg Jensen, the author, tweeted last week asking if anyone wanted a copy to review, I responded, and she was nice enough to send me an ebook copy. I really appreciate her generosity.
