Fallen by Lauren Kate

Fallen is the first book in the Fallen series by Lauren Kate.  It follows teenager, Luce, as she enters and tries to navigate her way around her new boarding school, Sword & Cross.

Here is the synopsis that I found on barnesandnoble.com
There's something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price's attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He's the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.
Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce--and goes out of his way to make that very clear--she can't let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.
Dangerously exciting and darkly romantic, Fallen is a page turning thriller and the ultimate love story.

What I liked:
So a lot of reviews I've read for this book were mixed.  You either loved it, or you hated it.  Apparently, I'm weird (shocker).  I didn't love it OR hate it.  It just was.
Luce's secret's intrigued me.  The shadows she saw, the mysterious fire that her boyfriend died in, that her parents just dumped her in this rundown school.  I wanted to read on to see just what was going on.  Plus, while the twist turns out to be a supernatural element, its not vampires or werewolves!

What I didn't like:
While there weren't any vampires or werewolves, it reminded me just a little too much of Twilight.  A new girl, at a very small new school, sees this boy that grabs her attention but wants nothing to do with her, however, once they talk it's not because he just really doesn't like her, its because he loves her just too much to be near her.

All in all:
I don't want to give the wrong impression when I say this, but I can't think of any other way to say it, so...Fallen just didn't grab and hold my attention like other books I've read.  That's not to say its a bad book, it just wasn't the "right fit" for me.  Fallen is at least worth a read, especially if you are a Twi-hard.  Everyone else, you should also read it, but you might just want to check it out from the library or borrow from a friend.
