The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas by Tony Wilson (Peachtree Publishers) was a delight to read! I love twisted fairy tales, and I just enjoyed that the princess in this story wasn't the frilly-dress, girly princess as in most fairy tales.
Here is the summary from Amazon:
After tiring of the needs of overly demanding princesses, Prince Henrik devises a test to find a girl who s not so sensitive, using a very thin mattress and an entire packet of frozen peas. His dream girl shows up unexpectedly in the form of his old friend Pippa, who is all too happy to pitch a tent or play a hard game of hockey, after which she finds the perfect use for that packet of peas! In this twist on the fairy tale, Tony Wilson and Sue DeGenarro deliver a freshly humorous take on one prince's search for the just-right girl of his dreams.
Prince Henrick knows he needs to find a princess to marry but he wants someone that he can have fun with and enjoy, so he asks his brother (he of the Princess and the Pea test) how he found his wife. So, his brother tells him about the pea test---and Prince Henrick realizes that his brother found his wife because she complains a lot. And that's not the kind of girl he wants! So, he decides he wants the girl that DOESN'T complain about the peas.
I love the twist, and I love that it was saying that girls don't have to be girly-girls, they can be themselves and still get that happily-ever-after.
The illustrations were great. At first glance, they seem childish/child-like, but if you look at them again, you'll see these great extra details that make them very interesting and complex.
The Princess and the Packet of Frozen Peas doesn't come out until April 1, so clicking the Amazon link above will take you to the pre-order page.
I'd like to thank Peachtree Publishing for sending me a copy of this book. I really appreciate it.
