Shelf Candy #5

Shelf Candy Saturday is a weekly meme hosted by the lovely ladies at Five Alarm Book Reviews in which we do the unthinkable *gasp* and judge a book by its cover!

I will admit, I had a hard time coming up with my shelf candy for this week.  I didn't go to any book stores this week *double gasp* and I really didn't have that much time to read reviews and see some awesome covers.  So, I jumped on handy dandy goodreads.com and looked to see what some of my friends were marking as read/to read, etc.

I came across this pretty cool looking cover

and knew I had to share.  The book is Anya's Ghost by Vera Brosgol and according to Goodreads it is about:
Anya could really use a friend. But her new BFF isn’t kidding about the “Forever” part . . . Of all the things Anya expected to find at the bottom of an old well, a new friend was not one of them. Especially not a new friend who’s been dead for a century. Falling down a well is bad enough, but Anya’s normal life might actually be worse. She’s embarrassed by her family, self-conscious about her body, and she’s pretty much given up on fitting in at school. A new friend—even a ghost—is just what she needs. Or so she thinks. Spooky, sardonic, and secretly sincere, Anya’s Ghost is a wonderfully entertaining debut from author/artist Vera Brosgol.

Yipes!  Sounds kind of creepy!  But, I can see me enjoying it!  The comments on goodreads say that its a "real" graphic novel (I'm guessing told with all graphics, not partly like Diary of a Wimpy Kid or Frankie Pickle).  The author's website suggests that it is more YA than MG or lower.

I'm also guessing that since the author, Vera Brosgol, is also the illustrator, that she did the cover art, too.   You can view more of her work ( including a 17 page preview of Anya's Ghost) at the above website.

  1. You have wowed me with a most unusual pick. The ghost in hair and the way it is done is really quite creative.

  2. It's a pretty cool cover, and if there are more graphics inside even cooler. I like how the 'ghosts' is in her hair and she looks kinda annoyed at this :)

  3. Why do I think the ghost is up to no good? That's the trouble with ghosts, they all have these secret agendas.

  4. It kind of looks like the person who drew the graphic novel Persopolis's style. That's a good book too. Love your pick!

  5. So cute! I feel like everyone has a spooky theme to their Shelf Candy's this week. Is Halloween in the air?

I was finally able to post my Shelf Candy for the week and it's pretty spooky too!
